Lift for a high-bay warehouse: which to choose
Working at high-bay racking: an electric scissor lift for narrow aisles and a level floor, an electric articulating boom lift over racking and conveyors. Non-marking tyres, zero emissions, narrow width, floor loading and working without shutting the warehouse down.

A high-bay warehouse means working at height all the time, from an aerial work platform (MEWP, or cherry picker): servicing luminaires and installations under the roof, inspecting racking and sprinklers, replacing labels and signs, stocktaking on the upper levels, installing conveyors. The machine is chosen here for four things: height, aisle width, clean and quiet operation, and floor loading.
Electric and quiet, because the work is indoors
In a closed hall with people and goods you do not work with a diesel machine. The standard is the electric scissor lift: battery-powered, emission-free and quiet, it does not pollute the air and does not disturb warehouse staff. Why electric drive wins indoors is explained in the article electric or diesel.
Scissor lift or articulating boom lift?
- Vertical work in the aisle, above the racking, from the front — scissor lift: a large platform, high capacity, straight up. The most common choice for a warehouse.
- You need to reach over racking, a conveyor or an installation — electric articulating boom lift: the articulated arm passes over the obstacle, so the machine stands in the aisle while the platform works above the structure.
- Spot jobs, tight passages — a light vertical mast lift that is easy to move and squeeze into a narrow space.
We have put together a comparison of the two types for work in a hall in the article scissor or articulating boom lift for building a hall.
Dimensions and aisle width
High-bay racking creates narrow corridors. Before the rental you give the aisle width and the working height, and we choose a machine with suitable dimensions and turning radius; there are narrow scissor lifts designed specifically for warehouse aisles. The clearance of gates and the height of entrances are also checked if the machine is to move between zones.
Floor: non-marking tyres and ground pressure
Warehouse machines run on non-marking tyres, which do not mark an industrial floor. An ordinary floor carries an electric scissor lift without a problem, but when working over ducts, mezzanines or light slabs you have to check the permissible load. How to convert the weight of a machine into ground pressure is shown in the article on the weight of a lift and floor loading.
Working without shutting the warehouse down
Servicing at height often takes place in an operating warehouse. The aisle where the machine stands is fenced off and marked, and forklift traffic is routed along a different corridor. Quiet, electric machines make it possible to work without stopping the whole facility. Operating the platform requires qualifications from the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT): we run courses with an examination, and you can check your knowledge in the online test.
Frequently asked questions
- Which lift should I use in a high-bay warehouse?
- For servicing work on racking and under the roof of a warehouse, an electric scissor lift is most often chosen: it gives a stable, large platform and drives into the aisles. When you need to reach over racking, over a conveyor or sideways over an obstacle, an electric articulating boom lift is better. The key features are electric drive (zero emissions), non-marking tyres and narrow dimensions matched to the aisle width.
- Can a diesel lift work inside a warehouse?
- Not in a closed hall with people and goods, because a diesel engine emits exhaust fumes and is noisy. Inside warehouses you work with electric (battery-powered) machines, which are emission-free and quiet. Diesel machines are kept for work outdoors, on the yard and on rough ground.
- Will the lift fit in a narrow aisle between racking?
- This has to be checked before the rental: you give the aisle width and the working height, and we choose a machine with suitable dimensions and turning radius. There are narrow scissor lifts designed for warehouse aisles. The clearance of the gate and the height of the entrance also matter if the machine is to move between zones.
- Will the lift damage the warehouse floor?
- Warehouse machines run on non-marking tyres, which leave no marks on an industrial floor. You do still need to check the machine’s ground pressure: when working over ducts, mezzanines or light slabs, you read off the permissible load. An ordinary industrial floor easily carries an electric scissor lift.
- A lift or a forklift with a work platform for work on racking?
- A forklift with a platform is an ad hoc solution and formally restricted: a basket on the forks is for occasional, short jobs. For regular work at height (servicing lighting, installations and racking, stocktaking) the proper and safe machine is a mobile elevating work platform: a scissor lift or an articulating boom lift with a full platform and guardrails.
