A vertical mast lift is an electric mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) with a vertical mast and a jib carrying the basket: it gets into places a larger machine cannot reach and reaches sideways over obstacles. At RK Rental we rent three self-propelled models: the Haulotte Star 10 (10 m working height, 3 m outreach) and the JLG Toucan 10E L (10.1 m, 3.38 m), both 0.99 m wide, and the JLG Toucan 12E Plus (12.65 m, 6.2 m outreach, 1.2 m wide). Each basket has a capacity of 200 kg.
For lifting materials only (ducts, pipes, boards) up to the ceiling we have a separate category: the Sumner 2000 manual material lift (installation lift).
What is a vertical mast lift used for?
The mast raises the basket vertically, and a short jib moves it sideways and over an obstacle: above racking, a production line, a machine or building services that you cannot drive underneath. This is how lighting, electrical installations, ventilation and air conditioning are installed and serviced, and how maintenance is carried out in halls, warehouses, shops and office buildings.
The drive is electric and battery-powered: no exhaust fumes, quiet operation and non-marking tyres, so you can work in a building that stays open. The Star 10 and the Toucan 10E L slew their turret through 345°, and their rear barely extends beyond the chassis when slewing, so they work next to walls and in narrow aisles. Both machines can also drive with the basket raised, which speeds up work along a row of light fittings or a run of services.
Vertical mast lift or scissor lift: which should I choose?
A scissor lift raises a large platform straight up; it is better when you work directly above the machine and need room for materials. A mast lift has a smaller basket, but its jib moves the basket sideways: outreach ranges from 3 m (Star 10) to 6.2 m (Toucan 12E Plus). Choose one when racking, a machine or building services stand below the work point and a scissor lift cannot get close enough.
For work higher than 12.65 m or with a greater sideways reach, we will offer an electric articulating boom lift. Describe the job (height, obstacles, access width and floor load capacity) and we will suggest a machine.
How do I get a vertical mast lift into a building?
When stowed, the Star 10 and the Toucan 10E L are 0.99 m wide and 1.99 m high, so they need an opening wider than 0.99 m and higher than 1.99 m. A gate or double doors are usually enough; a standard single door is narrower. The Toucan 12E Plus is 1.2 m wide.
For their size, these are heavy machines: the Toucan 10E L weighs 2,600 kg, the Star 10 2,677 kg and the Toucan 12E Plus 4,900 kg. Before driving onto a suspended floor or a mezzanine, or into a goods lift, check its load capacity; the ground pressure is given on the model's spec sheet.

Vertical mast lifts: frequently asked questions
How many people fit in the basket of a vertical mast lift?
The basket has a capacity of 200 kg, which covers people, tools and materials together. The Haulotte Star 10 and the JLG Toucan 10E L carry 2 people indoors and 1 person outdoors; the JLG Toucan 12E Plus carries 2 people.
Will a vertical mast lift go through a doorway?
When stowed, the Haulotte Star 10 and the JLG Toucan 10E L are 0.99 m wide and 1.99 m high: they will go through a gate or double doors, but not through a standard single door. The JLG Toucan 12E Plus is 1.2 m wide.
Can a vertical mast lift be used outdoors?
Yes, on firm, level ground: according to the manufacturers' spec sheets, all three self-propelled models may work outdoors, and the Star 10 and the Toucan 10E L then carry one person. They are, however, designed mainly for indoor use; for work on unpaved ground we will offer a 4×4 rough terrain lift.
Do I need a UDT licence to operate a vertical mast lift?
Yes. A self-propelled vertical mast lift (Star 10, Toucan) is a mobile elevating work platform, and operating one on your own requires a UDT qualification certificate (UDT is the Polish Office of Technical Inspection). RK Rental runs its own training courses with a board examination; you can ask about rental with an operator when requesting a quote.
Is a vertical mast lift the same as an aerial work platform (MEWP)?
Yes. “Aerial work platform” and “MEWP” (mobile elevating work platform) are the general names for lifts that raise people to work at height, and a vertical mast lift is one type of them. At RK Rental you will find it in the category “Vertical mast lifts”: every model has a data sheet with specifications and dimensions, and we arrange delivery.
