A diesel rough terrain scissor lift (mobile elevating work platform, MEWP) is an off-road machine with 4×4 drive and self-levelling outriggers, built for work straight up on construction sites and rough ground where an electric model cannot cope.
What are diesel scissor lifts used for?
A rough terrain scissor lift offers a large, wide platform and high capacity, while its sturdy 4×4 chassis and outriggers let it work on unpaved, uneven ground. It is the typical choice for building industrial halls, façade work, installing steel structures and sandwich panels, and anywhere you need to drive through mud or sand or onto a site before the floor slab is poured.
The deck extension increases working reach without repositioning the machine, and the high capacity lets several people go up with a full set of tools and materials.
When should I choose a diesel scissor lift?
Choose a diesel scissor lift when the work is outdoors, the ground is unpaved or uneven, and you need a large platform and high capacity. The 4×4 drive and outriggers provide stability and maximum capacity when handling large, bulky materials.
For work inside buildings where exhaust fumes are not allowed, choose an electric scissor lift. We will help you pick the right version for your specific task and ground conditions.

Diesel (rough terrain) scissor lifts: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a diesel and an electric scissor lift?
A diesel scissor lift is a 4×4 rough terrain machine with outriggers, built for outdoor work on unpaved ground, with a large platform and high capacity. An electric scissor lift is compact, quiet and emission-free, and is intended mainly for indoor use on a firm floor.
Can a rough terrain scissor lift cope with mud and sand?
Yes. Its 4×4 drive and off-road tyres handle unpaved, uneven ground. For work at height, the machine deploys self-levelling outriggers, which keep it stable even on a slope.
How many people and how much weight can the platform carry?
Rough terrain scissor lifts have a high capacity and a large platform: depending on the model, 2 to 7 people with tools and materials work on them (up to 7 on the Genie GS-3390 RT). We give the exact capacity and number of people for each model in its specifications; when the deck extension is pushed far out, capacity may be lower.
Is a rough terrain scissor lift the same as a diesel scissor lift?
Yes. A rough terrain scissor lift and a diesel scissor lift are the same machine: an aerial work platform (MEWP) with diesel drive, usually 4×4, for unpaved ground. At RK Rental you will find it in the category “Diesel (rough terrain) scissor lifts”: every model has a data sheet with specifications and dimensions, and we arrange delivery.
