A cherry picker (aerial work platform, MEWP) that goes through an ordinary door of about 0.9 m is a narrow 8 m electric scissor lift. These lifts have a working height of 7.7–8.2 m, weigh 1.5–2.1 t and run on non-marking tyres, so they work in shops, offices, schools, hotels and corridors, and reach a ceiling at 7–8 m. Which models fit which opening depends on the width of the machine:
- 0.76 m: Genie GS-1930, JLG 1930ES and 2030ES (8 m).
- 0.79 m: Haulotte Optimum 8 (8 m).
- 0.81 m: Genie GS-1932 and Haulotte Compact 8 (8 m), and Genie GS-2632 and Haulotte Compact 10N (10 m).
- 0.99 m: the vertical mast lift JLG Toucan 10E L (10.1 m) with a horizontal outreach of 3.4 m over racking or a counter.
- 1.17–1.20 m: the wider 10 m scissor lifts (Genie GS-2646, JLG 2646ES, Haulotte Compact 10).
The wider scissor lifts and the JLG Toucan 10E L fit through a 1.25 m gate. Below: the models, dimensions, weights and what to check in the building before delivery.
Which lifts will go through a door?
What counts is the width and height of the machine when folded, and its weight. The narrow electric scissor lifts from our fleet:
- Genie GS-1930 — 7.85 m, capacity 227 kg, 0.76 m wide, 1.83 m long, 2.16 m high, weight 1,456 kg — one of the narrowest and lightest.
- Haulotte Optimum 8 — 7.77 m, capacity 230 kg, 0.79 m wide, 1.90 m long, 1.99 m high, weight 1,590 kg.
- Genie GS-1932 — 7.79 m, capacity 227 kg, 0.81 m wide, 1.83 m long, 2.11 m high, weight 1,503 kg — for tight rooms and goods lifts.
- JLG 1930ES — 7.72 m, capacity 230 kg, platform 2.77×0.76 m, weight 1,565 kg.
- JLG 2030ES — 8.1 m, capacity 360 kg, 0.76 m wide, 1.82 m high, weight 2,065 kg — higher capacity.
- Haulotte Compact 8 — 8.2 m, capacity 350 kg, 0.81 m wide, weight 1,730 kg.
- Genie GS-2032 — 8.1 m, capacity 363 kg, 0.81 m wide, weight 1,825 kg. Both models (Compact 8 and GS-2032) go through double doors and gates.
- Zoomlion ZS0607AC-Li — 7.8 m, capacity 230 kg, platform 1.65×0.74 m, weight 1,455 kg.
The opening must be a few centimetres wider than the machine:
- 0.9 m door: all the narrow 8 m scissor lifts (0.76–0.81 m) will pass.
- 0.8 m door: only the machines 0.76 m wide (Genie GS-1930, JLG 1930ES, JLG 2030ES), and then with no margin.
- Low door (2.0 m): the height of the machine with its guardrail is 1.82–2.16 m, so you check the specific model. The lowest is the JLG 2030ES (1.82 m).
Which 10 m lift: through a door, a gate or a wide corridor?
- Genie GS-2632 — 9.85 m, capacity 227 kg, 0.81 m wide, 2.36 m long, 2.39 m high, weight 2,037 kg — narrow, fits through a 0.9 m wide door; through a door from about 2 m high it passes with the guardrails folded.
- Haulotte Compact 10N — 9.8 m, capacity 250 kg, 0.81 m wide, 2.50 m long, 2.35 m high, weight 2,160 kg — also narrow; with low doors, again with the guardrails folded.
- Genie GS-2646 — 9.9 m, capacity 454 kg, 1.17 m wide, weight 2,447 kg.
- JLG 2646ES — 9.9 m, capacity 450 kg, platform 3.77×1.12 m, weight 2,600 kg.
- Haulotte Compact 10 — 10 m, capacity 450 kg, 1.20 m wide, weight 2,490 kg.
- JLG Toucan 10E L — vertical mast lift, 10.1 m, 0.99 m wide, horizontal outreach 3.4 m, capacity 200 kg, weight 2,600 kg — the platform reaches over racking, a counter or a machine.
For the wider scissor lifts the opening needed is about 1.25 m wide and 2.4 m high (Toucan: 1.05×2.0 m). When you need to go higher, you move up to the class described in the article 12 m lift.
What jobs is an 8–10 m lift enough for?
- Shops and shopping centres — lights, suspended ceilings, advertising signs, cameras, seasonal decorations, washing glazing.
- Offices, schools, hotels, hospitals — lighting, air conditioning, detectors, networks, painting corridors and stairwells.
- Halls and warehouses up to 8–10 m — racking, conveyors, installations under the roof; the work is described in the article lift for installations under the ceiling.
- Installing materials — boards, ducts and pipes are handed up by a hand-operated vertical mast installation lift (Sumner 2000, 7.7 m, 300 kg, 190 kg unladen weight), which fits in a passenger lift (elevator).
What should you check in the building before delivery?
- Access route — width and height of doors, thresholds, ramps, turning radii in the corridor; the GS-1930 and GS-1932 are 1.83 m long, the Optimum 8 is 1.90 m.
- Goods lift (elevator) — a rated load greater than the weight of the machine (1.5–2.1 t) with a margin for the operator, and doors at least 0.9 m wide; the load capacity is confirmed by the building manager.
- Floor — floor slab, raised floor, tiles: the machine of 1.5–2.6 t stands on four wheels; the rules are in the article how much does a lift weigh.
- Charging — a 230 V socket overnight; one charging cycle is enough for a day of work.
- Qualifications — an operator with a certificate from the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT) or rental with an operator.
Give us the ceiling height, the door width and the type of floor, and we will choose the narrowest model that reaches and arrange its delivery, including to a city centre. The ordering process: lift rental step by step.
Frequently asked questions
- Which lift will go through an ordinary door?
Through a door about 0.9 m wide, the narrow 8 m electric scissor lifts will pass. With guardrails up they are 1.82–2.16 m high, and their widths are:
- Genie GS-1930: 0.76 m.
- JLG 1930ES and 2030ES: 0.76 m.
- Haulotte Optimum 8: 0.79 m.
- Genie GS-1932: 0.81 m.
- Haulotte Compact 8: 0.81 m.
- Genie GS-2032: 0.81 m.
The narrow 10 m lifts, the Genie GS-2632 and Haulotte Compact 10N (0.81 m), fit through a 0.9 m wide door, but through a door from about 2 m high only with the guardrails folded (without folding they need about 2.3–2.4 m). Through a 1.25 m gate the 10 m scissor lifts 1.17–1.20 m wide and the JLG Toucan 10E L vertical mast lift (0.99 m) will pass.
- Which lift should I use for a shop, office or school?
A narrow 8 m electric scissor lift is quiet, free of exhaust fumes, on non-marking tyres and weighs 1.5–2.1 t, so it can go onto a shop floor, a school corridor or an office block slab. It reaches a ceiling at 7–8 m, which is enough for lights, air conditioning units, detectors, advertising signs and suspended ceilings in most retail and office buildings. Higher, up to 10 m, you can use:
- Genie GS-2646, JLG 2646ES and Haulotte Compact 10: 1.17–1.20 m wide.
- The narrow Genie GS-2632 and Haulotte Compact 10N: 0.81 m wide.
- How does a vertical mast lift differ from a 10 m scissor lift?
- The JLG Toucan 10E L vertical mast lift has a working height of 10.1 m at a width of 0.99 m and a horizontal outreach of 3.4 m: the platform reaches over racking, a counter or a machine, which a scissor lift cannot do. Its platform capacity is 200 kg (2 people indoors, 1 outdoors). A 10 m scissor lift has a larger platform (up to 3.77 m long) and a capacity of 450 kg, but it has to stand directly under the work point.
- How much does a narrow 8 m lift weigh and will it go into a goods lift?
The narrow 8 m scissor lifts in our fleet weigh 1.46–2.07 t:
- Genie GS-1930: 1,456 kg.
- Genie GS-1932: 1,503 kg.
- JLG 1930ES: 1,565 kg.
- Haulotte Optimum 8: 1,590 kg.
- Haulotte Compact 8: 1,730 kg.
- JLG 2030ES: 2,065 kg.
A goods lift (elevator) will take a machine lighter than its rated load (with a margin for the operator and tools) that fits in the cabin and the doors, for example the Genie GS-1930 or GS-1932 (1.83 m long) or the Optimum 8 (1.90 m). The load capacity of the floor slab and of the goods lift is confirmed by the building manager.
- Do I need a UDT licence for a narrow 8 m lift?
- Yes: every mobile elevating work platform, including an 8 m scissor lift, requires the operator to hold a qualification certificate from the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT) for mobile elevating work platforms. The exception is the manual installation lift (Sumner 2000, 7.7 m), which is not a platform for people but a material lift. Companies without a qualified employee rent the machine with an operator.
