Lift for painting halls and steel structures

An electric scissor lift for painting the walls and roof of a hall from inside, an electric articulating boom over machinery and racking, a diesel scissor lift and a 4×4 articulating boom for structures outdoors, anti-corrosion work and blasting. Capacity for the spray unit, height to the ridge, protecting the machine from paint and ventilation.

For painting a hall from the inside (walls, girders, purlins, trapezoidal sheeting) the best choice of aerial work platform (MEWP) is an electric scissor lift: the wide platform holds the painter, the spray unit and the paint, and the machine travels along the wall with no exhaust fumes and no marks on the floor. Over machines, conveyors and racking an electric articulating boom lift (cherry picker) is used. Outdoors, at canopies, elevated pipe racks, tanks and the steel frame of a hall under construction, you use a diesel rough terrain scissor lift or a 4×4 articulating boom lift. Below: how to choose a machine for spray and roller painting, for anti-corrosion work and blasting, how to work out the height and capacity, and how to protect the machine from paint.

Which lift for which painting job?

  • Electric scissor lift — painting walls, columns and the roof structure in a finished hall, warehouse or workshop. A platform like a work table: two painters, a spray unit, buckets, rollers on poles. In our fleet 7.7–14.3 m working height, platform capacity 227–565 kg, and narrow models 0.76–0.81 m wide pass between racking. Non-marking tyres and no exhaust fumes mean you can paint in an operating plant.
  • Electric articulating boom lift — when a machine, production line, conveyor or rack stands in front of the wall or under the girder: the platform reaches over the obstacle (horizontal outreach 5.6–13.5 m, working height up to 20.4 m).
  • Diesel rough terrain scissor lift — structures in a yard, sheet-metal façades, the steel frame of a hall before cladding, canopies and elevated pipe racks: 10–18 m working height, capacity up to 1,134 kg, a platform up to 6 m long with room for all the blasting and metal spraying equipment.
  • Diesel articulating boom lift — trusses, girders and columns painted from “inside” the structure, tanks, chimneys, pipelines on elevated pipe racks: 12.5–43 m working height, horizontal outreach 6.8–21.3 m, 4×4 drive across a building site.

How do you work out the height and capacity for painting?

The working height is the platform floor plus about 2 m of arm reach; for painting trapezoidal roof sheeting you count the height to the ridge, not to the eaves. The capacity covers everything at once: people, spray unit, hose, paint and tools. A typical airless spray unit weighs several dozen kilograms and a bucket of paint 20–25 kg. On a scissor lift platform this fits without a problem; in the platform of an articulating boom lift (usually 200–230 kg, the largest models up to 450 kg) the spray unit usually stays on the ground and only the hose with the gun goes up. How to read the height and outreach from the machine datasheet is shown in the article how to read the load and reach chart.

Anti-corrosion work, blasting and metal spraying from a lift

When a steel structure is renovated the work goes in stages: cleaning (abrasive blasting or hydro-blasting), primer, topcoat. For blasting a diesel scissor platform is chosen: it carries the hose with the abrasive and a person in a full protective suit, and its capacity allows you to take up a stock of abrasive. The machine’s cylinders, hoses and control panel are shielded from the abrasive, and after the work they are blown out and cleaned. Between the stages the machine stays on site: for work lasting weeks, long-term rental pays off.

How do you protect a lift from paint?

  • Film and tape — the control panel, guardrails, platform floor and the parts of the boom within reach of the spray mist. The ground control panel as well, because when you work under a roof the mist settles low.
  • Tyres — when working over a freshly painted floor or near a screed the wheels are protected so that paint is not carried around the hall.
  • Cleaning before return — dirt is removed with an agent suited to the paint; under the rental terms the machine is returned clean, with no traces of paint, and dried paint on the panel and guardrails makes cleaning harder.

Safety when painting from a lift

  • Ventilation — with solvent-based paints and spraying you work with the gates open or with mechanical ventilation, in masks with filters; an electric lift adds no exhaust fumes.
  • Hose and cables — they are routed so that they do not catch on the scissor mechanism or the boom during movement; the hose must not pull the operator or the platform.
  • Area under the platform — fenced off; mist and dripping paint must not reach people and production.
  • Licences — the operator of a mobile elevating work platform holds a qualification certificate from the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT), and in the platform of an articulating boom lift a safety harness with a lanyard is required. Painting firms without a qualified employee take the machine with an operator.

How do you order a lift for painting?

Just give the height of the hall or structure, the type of floor or ground, the obstacles (machines, racking, lines), the painting technique (spraying, roller, blasting) and the planned duration of the work. We choose the type and model, organise delivery and collect the machine when the work is finished. On larger sites it is worth combining two machines, a scissor lift for the walls and an articulating boom lift over the process lines, so that the crew does not wait for a single platform. The principles of selection for a whole hall are also described in the article scissor or articulating boom lift for a hall.

Frequently asked questions

Which lift should I use for painting a hall from the inside?
Most often an electric scissor lift: a wide platform holds the painter, the spray unit and the buckets, and the machine travels along the wall or under the girders with no exhaust fumes and no marks on the floor. In our fleet electric scissor lifts have a working height of 7.7–14.3 m and a platform capacity of 227–565 kg. Over machines, conveyors and racking, where a scissor lift cannot drive straight up, an electric articulating boom lift (up to 20 m) is used.
Which lift should I use for painting a steel structure outdoors?
In a yard, at a canopy, an elevated pipe rack, a tank or the columns of a hall under construction: a diesel rough terrain scissor lift (10–18 m, capacity up to 1,134 kg, platform up to 6 m long) or a diesel 4×4 articulating boom lift (12.5–43 m) when you have to reach over foundations, pipes and other obstacles. Trusses and girders are painted from inside the structure, so horizontal outreach matters, not just height.
Will a paint spray unit fit in the lift platform?
Yes: a typical airless spray unit weighs several dozen kilograms and, together with the painter, hose and paint, it fits within the capacity of a scissor lift platform (in our fleet 227–565 kg for electric ones, up to 1,134 kg for diesel ones). In the platform of an articulating boom lift (usually 200–230 kg, the largest models up to 450 kg) the unit normally stays on the ground and only the hose with the gun goes up. The hose is routed so that it does not catch on the scissor mechanism or the boom.
How do I protect the lift from paint?
Before spray painting, the machine is covered with film and tape: the control panel, the guardrails and the platform floor, and the parts of the boom within reach of the mist. The tyres are covered when working over a fresh floor. Under the rental terms the machine is returned clean, with no traces of paint, so a soiled machine is cleaned before return, with a method suited to the type of paint. For blasting, the cylinders and hoses are also protected from the abrasive.
Do I need ventilation when painting from a lift in a hall?
Yes, especially with solvent-based paints and spraying: you work with the gates open or with mechanical ventilation, in masks with filters, and the area under the platform is fenced off. An electric lift adds no exhaust fumes to the air in the hall, which is why electric machines are chosen for interiors and diesel ones are left for outdoors.
