Mini excavator: what jobs it suits and how to choose one

Trenches for utility connections, foundations and work in tight spaces. When to choose a mini excavator, how an expanding undercarriage lets it through a gate and which buckets to match to the job.

A mini excavator is a small, manoeuvrable machine for earthworks in places with limited access. Where a large excavator will not fit, or would damage a landscaped area, a small tracked machine squeezes through a gate, works between buildings and leaves things tidy behind it. It is equipment for trenches for utility connections, foundations, drainage and tidying work on plots and private properties.

What a mini excavator is used for

The most common uses are trenches for water, sewer, gas, electricity and services connections, trenches for foundations and footings, drainage and dewatering, and also tidying and levelling the ground in gardens. Thanks to its small dimensions the machine works in tight places: against the wall of a building, between plantings, on a narrow plot. You will find the full offer in the section on mini excavators.

Expanding undercarriage: through the gate, stable at work

The most important feature of a mini excavator is its expanding tracked undercarriage. For travel the machine narrows its undercarriage to about 1 m (Kubota KX018-4: 0.99 m), so it gets through a gate or a wider garden gate (from about 1 m), and at the place of work it widens the tracks, gaining a wider, stable base for digging. Tracks give low ground pressure, so they damage lawns, paving and driveways less than wheels. Before renting, it is worth measuring the narrowest point on the route to the excavation.

Buckets and attachments: matching them to the job

The range of work of a mini excavator depends on the attachments chosen:

  • Narrow bucket: trenches for cables, pipes and connections, where a narrow trench matters.
  • Wider bucket: trenches for foundations and larger earthworks.
  • Grading bucket: profiling, levelling the ground and finishing work.

Access, ground and licences

We deliver the mini excavator on a trailer, so before the work it is worth agreeing the unloading point and the route to the excavation; what to think about is collected in the article how to prepare a site for a machine delivery. Operating an excavator requires operator licences for earthmoving machinery; if you do not have them, you can rent the machine with or without an operator. Describe the scope of the work to us and we will advise on the choice of machine and buckets and prepare a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What jobs is a mini excavator suited to?
Trenches for water and sewer connections, cables and services, foundations and drainage, and earthworks and tidying in gardens and on private plots. It works wherever small dimensions and work in tight spaces count, where a large excavator will not fit or would damage the ground.
Will a mini excavator get through a gate and a garden gate?
Yes. Thanks to its expanding tracked undercarriage the mini excavator (Kubota KX018-4) narrows its undercarriage to about 1 m (0.99 m) and gets through a gate or a wider garden gate (from about 1 m), and at the place of work it widens the undercarriage, which gives stability while digging. Before renting, tell us the narrowest point on the route so that we can choose a suitable model.
What buckets are available for a mini excavator?
Buckets of different widths are chosen for the machine for digging (narrow ones for cables and pipes, wider ones for earthworks), plus a grading bucket for profiling, levelling and finishing work. At RK Rental the Kubota KX018-4 mini excavator comes with a set of four buckets: 25, 30 and 50 cm and a 100 cm grading bucket.
What licences are needed to operate a mini excavator?
Operating an excavator requires operator licences for earthmoving machinery (single-bucket excavators). If you do not have a licensed operator, ask about renting the mini excavator with an operator when requesting a quote; with your own licensed operator you rent the machine alone.
Tracked or wheeled mini excavator?
For work on private plots and in the field a tracked mini excavator is most often chosen: tracks give low ground pressure (less damage to lawns and paving) and good stability on uneven, soft ground, and the expanding undercarriage lets it squeeze through narrow passages.
